Malaysia is well-positioned to become a key player in the rapidly expanding global space economy, thanks to its equatorial location, robust talent pool and growing technological infrastructure, the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (MOSTI) said.
Speaking at the Space Conference-Space Economy Revolution: Trends, Technologies and Strategies, held on the sidelines of Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA ’25), MOSTI Deputy Secretary-General (Technology Development) Datuk Dr Mohd Nor Azman Hassan said Malaysia’s geographical advantage offers strategic benefits for space launch capabilities.
“Launching satellites from the equator reduces fuel use, time and costs, making Malaysia an ideal site for sustainable rocket launches,” he told Bernama after delivering the conference’s opening remarks.
The half-day event, organised by Global Exhibitions & Conferences Sdn Bhd and supported by the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA), gathered over 150 participants, including Southeast Asian space agency leaders, academia, industry experts and government officials. The conference focused on emerging space trends, technologies and regional cooperation.
Highlighting Malaysia’s growing space ambitions, the event also witnessed the exchange of Letters of Intent (LOIs) between several key stakeholders, including Uzma Bhd and Global Systemes Asia Sdn Bhd, SpaceIn Sdn Bhd and Global Systemes Asia Sdn Bhd, International Islamic University Malaysia and Ocullospace Sdn Bhd, MYSA and Iskandar Regional Development Authority, and MYSA and Ocullospace Sdn Bhd.
These collaborations aim to accelerate research and development, boost industry-academic linkages and advance Malaysia’s space capabilities.
“Malaysia’s strengths in technology, infrastructure and human capital combined with strategic partnerships make it an emerging hub for regional space innovation,” Mohd Nor Azman added.
He shared that as the global space economy is projected to reach over US$1 trillion by 2040, Malaysia’s strategic positioning and proactive policy development could enable it to capture a meaningful share of this market.
